Ametrine buying guide

Ametrine buying guide

by Sheweta Dhanuka

Ametrine is a transparent gemstone consisting very few flaws. Naturally occurring gemstone may possess little stress flaws around the colour change zone but rest would have clarity. Further with the increase in size the clarity increases as flaws almost become negligible.

Nature has offered gemstone lovers a fascinating gem called as Ametrine. It is bi-colored quartz found naturally. It is an amazing combination of two semi precious stones viz. citrine and amethyst. It possesses properties of both these stones therefore it becomes a unique gem.

These days jewelry designers use Ametrine creatively to make fashionable jewelry items keeping in mind the incredible blend of two colours. This gives gemstone wearers an opportunity to enjoy wearing two different types of gems in one stone. However, the buyers need to be little careful while making the purchase of Ametrine gem or jewelry made up of this gemstone. This article provides the necessary information that would help in buying the true stone.

First, it is crucial to learn as how Ametrine comes into existence naturally. When quartz containing high iron impurities is exposed to different temperatures it results in oxidation. The 50% of the quartz bears high temperature on its surface while rest 50% slightly cool temperature. In this way quartz balances the two extreme temperature intensity at the time of crystallization. Thus, two different colours are produced and Ametrine is formed. This process occurs rarely and so is genuine Ametrine.

A mine known as Rio Grande do Sul at Brazil is said to produce this beautiful gemstone first. Now, natural Ametrine is procured from only one mine in the world that is Anahi Mine at Bolivia. In any case Ametrine from Bolivia is more valuable than the one obtained from Brazil. However, there are many in genuine gemstones sold as Ametrine in the market. These are synthetic Ametrine that are produced in Russia. Basically it is simulated amethyst. Half of amethyst gemstone, purple in colour is heated with yellow heat/light to produce yellow colour of citrine. These synthetic gems look quite identical to the natural Ametrine. The buyers can identify the true stone on the basis of colour, clarity, cut and carat weight.

Genuine Ametrine would emit lovely purple colour of amethyst and yellow of citrine. Both the colours complement each other very well. There can be slight variation in the shades but the basic colour has to be purple and yellow only. While selecting Ametrine gemstone always look for fine colour split and bright intensity of the two colours. Naturally occurred Ametrine would consist random colour zones that exhibit the effect of the mixing colours. More clear the colour zone, better is the quality of the gem.

Ametrine is a transparent gemstone consisting very few flaws. Naturally occurring gemstone may possess little stress flaws around the colour change zone but rest would have clarity. Further with the increase in size the clarity increases as flaws almost become negligible. It consists of vitreous luster that enhances its beauty.

Clarity of Ametrine is enhanced through cutting. This gemstone occurs in large sizes referred as rough. Rough when processed attains clarity though efficient cutting. Gemstone cutters cut the rough in such a way that the flaws or the fractures are removed and the colour zone is highlighted. It is cut into many different shapes viz. oval, marquise, pear, emerald and rectangle etc. Cutters give more innovative shapes to Ametrine that creates some internal reflection offering the perfect blend to attractive shades. However, rectangular shape is the best shape as it exhibits exact 50-50 pairing of purple and yellow colour. The perfect blend of two colours is clearly visible in this shape that enables to identify the original gemstone.

Many females prefer long earrings and pendent having Ametrine gemstone. Thus, long shapes are more suitable for such jewelry items. Moreover, jewelry designs are specially created to incorporate the different shapes in order to highlight the twin colours.

Higher the carat weight and size of the stone, better is the visibility of two distinctive colours. Usually, seven and more than seven is the ideal carat weight to view the colour contrast. Ametrine of five carat is also fine but less than five would not give the desired effect and look. Although, people have to pay higher price with the increase in carat weight but still Ametrine turns out to be inexpensive as it is wearing two stones at price of one.

Natural Ametrine from Bolivia with high carat weight, perfect clarity and bright colours would fetch maximum price. As it occurs rarely, it is priced little more. With the only source of Ametrine that is mines at Bolivia totally worked out someday, the prices would rise further. This would increase the probability of synthetic Ametrine getting sold at the price of natural gemstone hence, buyers needs to be more cautious while making the purchase.

Apart from the versatile properties, it is one of the most durable gemstone as well. It is considered as excellent gemstone for the jewelry items. Females treasure rings, earring and pendent with large size Ametrine a lot. Bracelets too are becoming quite popular. The metal used for making ornaments are mostly 18K yellow gold and sterling silver. It is also paired with other stones to give more captivating look to the wearer.

Ametrine is quite wearable on the daily basis. It is 7 Mohs on the hardness scale and is insensitive to household chemicals and cosmetics. As such no special precautions need to be taken for this gemstone and jewelry made of the same. However, too much of rough handling might spoil the natural luster of the gem.

It is a belief that Ametrine balances the metaphysical properties of Amethyst and Citrine. It is believed to develop creativity, self-confidence, self-esteem and emotional stability. It is associated with sixth chakra that relates to inner consciousness thus aids to meditation and increases personal power and spiritual awareness.

Wearing two beautiful natural colours and luminescence at the price of one is a wonder. This wonder comes true with Ametrine. This unusual gemstone brings the wearer close to natural beauty and divine power. Try wearing it !!

This lustrous gemstone rates only between 5.5-6 Mohs on the hardness scale. It is very delicate and thus demands extra care and precautions. It should be protected from harsh chemicals and acids present in cosmetics and cleaning agents.

Diopside, the name is derived from the Greek word ‘diopsis’ that means ” two kind of vision or to have a double appearance’. It is named so because when viewed from one side it exhibits one colour while from another side it appears in different shade. This phenomenon is known as pleochroism.

It is a beautiful gemstone but still has been overlooked for many years. It is quite difficult to procure this stone and is found in very less quantities. To make it recognized more and more in the market it is priced less in spite of its rare occurrence, difficult mining process and very less production rate.

Diopside with Vesuvianite

It is an important rock forming mineral in metamorphic and igneous rock. The sources of this mineral are New York in United States, Outokumpu in Finland, Ural Mountains and Lake Baikal in Russia and Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. Other countries are Austria, Germany, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Mogok, Myanmar (Burma), Madagascar, Canada, Pakistan, Quebec, Sweden, Kimberly and South Africa.

It occurs in green, blue, white, purple, brown, colorless and gray. Few other shades are yellowish brown and greenish brown. Based on the colours this gemstone is categorized into different varieties. All the five different forms of Diopside are rare. The properties mentions below in the tabular format would be same for all the varieties of this mineral.

Ordinary Diopside

It can occur in any colour or shade mentioned above and would possess glassy luster. It is the most common mineral and found in many countries in the world.

Violan

It is light blue to purple in colour. This colour appears due to the presence of high amount of manganese in the chemical composition. It is procured mainly from Italy. It is sometimes used as beads.

Malacolite

It is fluorescent variety occurring in white colour or slightly tinted. Finest quality of this variety is found in Pawling, Dutchess Co., New York in United States of America.

Cat’s Eye

This variety is green in colour. It produces linear luminescence when light falls on the crystal and the few inclusions present reflects back the light. High quality stones are obtained from DeKalb, St. Lawrence county and New York in United States of America. India also is the major producer.

Star Diopside

It is black or brown in colour hence also called as black star Diopside. It is named so because it contains needle like inclusions that reflects back the light and produce 4 rayed/arms star like appearance. It is found in abundant quantity in India. It is cut into thick cabochons shapes to make fascinating jewelry pieces. Also used for making small carved figures used for the decorative purpose.

Chrome Diopside

This variety is used as gemstone. It is referred as Diopside instead of Chrome Diopside among the people dealing in gemstones. Although at present it is not very popular but soon because of it’s splendid colour and affordability, it would gain a specific position in the gemstone trade market. Thus, this article would be offering the valuable details and facts about this stone that waits for getting recognized. The given information would act as the buying guide for the buyers while making the purchase of a genuine gemstone.

Colour

It is bright green in colour that is very well saturated all over the crystal. The colour of the stone becomes dark with the increase in size and also after all the necessary gemstone processing is completed. As a result when it reaches the dealers for sale it gains dark green colour that looks amazing. Green colour appears due to presence of chromium in the chemical composition thus, it is named as Chrome Diopside.

Clarity

This bright stone contains vitreous luster and is transparent in nature. It can be eye clean or might contain few flaws. Being transparent the inclusions are clearly visible in the crystal by the naked eyes. The stones with no or minimum flaws should be selected. This gemstone sparkles due to very high refractive index, which is double of the precious stone emerald.

Cut

Although relatively soft, it is cut into different shapes and styles. However, in order to attain higher production rate and less wastage it should be cut into shapes with rounded corners like round, oval and sometimes pear. The shapes like square and marquise with sharp corners must be totally avoided as it results in high wastage.

Carat Weight

It is found in large sizes as rough but unfortunately for the end user it is available only in small sizes as gemstone. The reason being, only 10% of the rough is successfully converted into final processed gems. Sometimes the conversion rate from rough into gems even falls below 10%. As the stone is fragile and soft in nature, during the initial gemstone processing majority of the rough is wasted. The ideal stone size used for the making jewelry items is 8 x 6 mm or 10 x 8 mm with the carat weight between 2-5 ctw. Stones beyond 10 ctw are very rare and almost impossible to find from the mines.

Price

This gemstone is priced very moderately in spite of being scarce in nature. Infact, sometimes due to lower price it is looked upon as poor quality gem. Where else, in reality it is a very rich stone that is very friendly with the pocket of the common man. Price is determined on the basis of intensity of the colour, clarity and carat weight. Bright green colour stone without any flaws is most valuable.

Enhancements and Imitations

It is never enhanced by any method. However, synthetic stones are created using sand and lime. Glass and plastic is also used for making artificial green colored stones. Finest quality of original stone is obtained from the country Siberia so these man made stones are sold under the trade name Siberian Emerald or Russina Emerald. It is sometimes also confused with other semi precious gemstones viz. Peridot and Hiddenite. Buyers need to be careful of these imitations while making the purchases.

Occurrence

It is found in iron mines, limestone quarries and marble quarries in compact, granular, columnar or massive form. Metamorphic and igneous rocks are the main source of this gemstone. It is very difficult and risky to mine this gemstone thus the production is not very steady.
Source – Remote locations at Yakutia and Siberia produces very fine quality of this green colored gemstone. Mining in these countries is done in very cold temperature. Finest quality is obtained from Outokumpu in Finland, Mt. Vesuvius in Italy and the Ural Mountains of Russia. It is also procured from Madagascar, Canada, Kenya and North Korea.

Uses

One unique use is that it is used as diamond mine indicator mineral. Secondly, lovely jewelries are made using this gemstone. As it is produced in the stone size of smaller magnitude, earrings and pendants are the better choice than the rings. Also it being quite soft, rings made using this stone are not retained for a longer duration. Stud earrings made from this gem looks amazing.

Jewelries can be made of 14K or 18K yellow gold and sterling silver. It is also paired with other gemstones like sapphires, diamonds and Tsavorite. It can be set into prong or bezel or bead setting. Amazonite Buying Guide

Amazonite Buying Guide

When buying Amazonite gem, first check for luster. The surface of the gem should be bright and shinning. It consists of vitreous luster that separates it from all other green coloured gems. The stone is opaque and translucent in nature. As it is opaque, clarity is difficult to be judged and also it does not weigh much importance.

Amazonite, the name is derived from the Amazon river, although it is not procured from the river. It is also called as Amazonstone. The composition of Amazonite is Potassium aluminosilicate [KAlSi3O8] and is found in igneous rock. It belongs to feldspar family and referred as Microcline. It occurs in crystal forms in large sizes. Amazonite

Since 19th century United States is the major producer of the gemstone. It is also found in Brazil, Italy, Canada and Ural Mountain of Russia. The quality of this semi precious gemstone with respect to purity and vibrant colour, is best obtained from United States. Other countries that offer Amazonite are East Siberia, Ukraine, Middle Asia and North Karelia.

However, usually all the stones of this semi precious variety possess deep clarity.

Rough Amazonite Video

After the luster, colour is a crucial characteristic to be checked before buying a true stone. This bright luster gemstone occurs in different shades of green to blue-green. The most common colour is bluish green while pure green colour is very rare. The green colour appears due to the presence of lead impurity in the composition. Any colour shade of the stone may not be evenly spread throughout the surface. Colour patches on the surface of the gem could be visible in few gemstones. Amazonite also consists of white streaks / white lines within its structure. These white lines, visible by naked eyes are called as perthitic texture. Few gemstone collectors treasure these lines a lot and prefer amazonite possessing the same.

Amazonite Rock

Amazonite is cut into various shapes and styles due to its simple cleavage like heart, square, oval, round etc. Cabochon is the most popular shape. This unique property makes the gemstone quite in demand among the jewelry designers. It is paired with other semi precious stones to create amazing ornaments. In west, this gemstone is not only used for making jewelry items but also for making decorative items such as attractive chandeliers, vases, lampshade, decorative boxes, candle holder etc.

On an average this gemstone is priced moderately as it is available in large quantity. However, the price difference between two amazonite stones would be due to the difference in size, carat weight, colour, luster and originality. Larger the size more will be the price and vice versa. Larger stones give a rich and authentic look to the jewelry items. Next is carat weight. Increase in carat weight would also increase the price of the gemstone. Being, an affordable semi precious stone, gemstone lovers prefer wearing high carat weight stone in finger rings and earrings that is single stone weighing between 3-5 carat.

Similarly, the cost of the gemstone increases with the brightness of the colour and luster. More intense the colour and luster, more valuable the gem becomes in terms of money. Pure green coloured gemstone is rarely found hence, fetches maximum price. White lines present in green coloured Amazonite are further more valuable. Lastly, buyers should always look for natural gemstone. Natural stones are priced more than the synthetic and treated gemstones. If the gemstone is natural, possess rare green colour with white streaks and is large, high carat weight with vitreous luster then it would cost the maximum. The cost would come down when one or more than one of these characteristics are missing.

Inspite of being quite affordable, few dealers sell some other stones as Amazonite. It is often confused with other semi precious stone Jade. Amazon jade is the name commonly used to mislead the innocent buyers. One also has to be careful from cheap imitations and synthesized stones. However, it is even used as a substitute for the precious gemstone Emerald and semi precious gemstone Turquoise.

Apart from the gemstone, it is largely used in form of beads and cameos for different jewelry items. Many females around the world wear plain amazonite beads string in form of a necklace. Beads possess bright colour thus, offer grace and sophisticated look to the ornaments. It might even consist of white lines that further enhance the appearance of the jewelry.

While making the purchase of beads always take care of few things. The colour and luster should be as bright and intense as in Amazonite gemstones. White lines if present then it should be balanced in all the beads. Good colour offers harmonious look to the necklace and long earrings. All the beads in the strings should be evenly shaped. Size of the hole of the bead should be large enough to get into a strong double/triple thread. Not a single bead should not be cracked or chipped from the hole else it might slowly tear the thread and valuable beads can be lost. Finally, make sure the length of the strand is not less as promised by the seller. Sometimes, buyers end up paying the price of 16 inch strand and take away only 15 inch or 14 inch strand. Therefore, always check for the length before leaving the seller’s premises.

Like all other gemstone, Amazonite gems and beads should be protected from sharp blows and scratches. It measures 6 Mohs on the hardness scale. Jewelry boxes lined with soft cloth or cotton must be used for storing gemstone and respective ornaments. For cleaning, only mild soap water should be used. After cleaning, the gemstone and its jewelry items, must be wiped off with a soft cloth in such a way that no moisture is left behind.

For generations, Amazonite is considered to possess many metaphysical properties. Few to mention are – it is believed to heal mental and physical problems. It is also said that the wearer of this gem develops many soft skills like effective communication, self – expression and public speaking. It also enhances intuition power, creativity and intellect. The stone is responsible to relieve stress, fear, anxiety and exhaustion. It is associated with heart chakra and throat chakra thus dispels erratic and negative energies. Across the globe people wear this gemstone to balance all the charkas and attain peace at heart and mind.

Apart for these metaphysical properties, Amazonite is considered as lucky ” Hope Stone”. This implies that the wearer of this gemstone gets positive dreams and turns hopeful towards life. So if one wants their luck to favor them then they should try wearing this bluish green gemstone. Do give a thought !!

Amber Facts

Amber Facts

The credit of popularity of this coloured gem is to the movie ‘ Jurassic Park’. As before the release of the movie there was negligible demand of Amber or its jewelry and after the movie release the demand soar very high. It happened so because from the movie billions of people learned that DNA of dinosaur was extracted from the insect trapped in amber.

Amber is a fossilized pine tree sap. It belongs to the family of organic gemstones. It is the only gemstone that helps in knowing our history. Its name is derived from Medieval French and Latin word ‘ambra’ and from Arabic word ‘anbar ambergris’. It is one of the most popular semi precious colored stone in the present time.

The credit of popularity of this colored gem is to the movie ‘ Jurassic Park’. As before the release of the movie there was negligible demand of Amber or its jewelry and after the movie release the demand soar very high. It happened so because from the movie billions of people learned that DNA of dinosaur was extracted from the insect trapped in amber. People then came to know about its beauty and worth.

With the increasing demand of the gemstone, many faulty stones are sold at the price of genuine stones. By looks the true stone and imitation are exactly similar and it becomes very difficult to differentiate between the two. Thus, this article equips with the all purpose information about this valuable gem that would help the buyer in making the right purchase. Further, here are few conducts through which a genuine stone can be identified.

A true Amber is having very less specific gravity thus, would float on the salty water unlike the imitations. It can be burned, under UV light and shall not crumble easily like modern tree resins. To determine the natural amber bead from those that are combined with resin stabilizers, heat the tip of a sewing needle till it is white hot then insert the needle in bland area. The true amber would emit pine-scented aroma while plastic resin would smell off like burnt plastic. Color, clarity, density, toughness, softness and trapped insects etc are also some of the characteristics that help in distinguishing the true stone from the synthetic resins.

Colour – It possess unique golden colour same as that of the colour of honey. The colour varies from deep yellow, orange, red, brown to golden. All these colours offer stunning look to the stone thus, are very much in demand. Other colour possibilities are off white, dark brown, black, blue or green.

Clarity – This striking gem could be clear while some stones might hold few inclusions. Flaws or inclusions for this gemstone are positive feature as it enhances the look and monetary worth of the stone. Some people in many countries adore gas bubbles present within the stone. Sometimes the flaws are especially inserted in the stone through the man made treatments. Through the close look at the inclusions, buyers can differentiate between the original gemstone and imitations.

The most unusual inclusions found are the insects gripped in the stones. Such stones are most in demand in the entire world and per carat price is very high. Females adore the jewelry holding these insect intact gems.

Varieties – Amber is divided into different varieties on the basis of the inclusions present inside the stone. These inclusions can be naturally formed or created through the man made treatments.

Fatty Amber – This variety consists of inclusions in the form of gas bubbles. These bubbles looks like goose fat so it named so. It is also called as Flohmig in German.

Bone Amber – It is white in colour.
Cloudy Amber – When gas bubbles flaws are large it looks like cloud thus it is named as cloudy amber.
Pressed Amber – It is created through the heat treatment. Under mild heat and huge pressure small size stones are pressed together to form pressed amber.
Sun Spangles – It contains inclusions that appear like nasturtium leaves.

Cut – It is a soft stone thus cutting is little difficult. However, with the help of modern techniques it can be given any shape. It has better retention in large sizes thus, cutting in small sizes is preferred less.

Carat Weight – It is a fossil so found as medium and small forms. After initial essential processing, gemstone is made. Depending on the jewelry design the stone has to be selected from the stones of different carat weight. For man’s rings gem more than 2 carat is more suitable whereas gems in female’s rings and pendants can be between 2-5 ctw. Similarly the stud earrings could have stones of the same carat weight. Moreover, stones of high carat weight with insects trapped in it make fascinating jewelry and the wearer look very attractive. The stone used for decorative purpose are certainly more than five carats.

Price – It is priced a little more than the general affordable category. The price is determined on the basis of carat weight, inclusions, and the rarity of inclusions within the stone. Higher the carat weight more shall be the price. Per carat weight further increases when the inclusion present is insects/animals/plant in the stone. The rarity of the trapped insect/animal/plant determines the value of the amber more so than the quality of the gem. The reason being, these are fossils that no more exist today. Amber has greatly amplified the knowledge about the evolution of insects, animals and plants.

Occurrence – It is an amorphous hydrocarbon that came into existence millions of years ago. It is a fossil tree sap that is obtained from different ancient trees viz. pines, deciduous trees and conifers. The tree sap or resin to be Amber has to be tens of millions of years old else a relatively newly hardened tree sap is called as copals. The incredible uniqueness of this fossil given by Mother Nature is the preserved insects, animals and plants in it that are extinct for hundreds of years now. The insects that are enclosed within this gemstone probably got there when they flew or crawled on to the fresh seeping sap of the tree and then got stuck. Later the sap oozed over the trapped animals and perhaps fell to the ground and then was roofed by dirt and trash. The sap later hardened and became a fossil known as Amber.

The insects found mostly are gnats, flies, wasps, bees and ants. Insects trapped sporadically are grasshoppers, preying mantises, beetles, moths, termites, butterflies, etc. The animals found are spiders, centipedes and scorpions. Sometimes even frogs and lizards get trapped in the tree sap. Large animals like mammals or birds are too big to be ensnared in the sap but their feathers and fur could be seen. Invaluable plant remains could also be found such as flowers, mushroom caps, seeds, leaves, stems, pine needles and pine cones.

Source – The prime source of this wonderful gemstone is the mine in Baltic region at Russia, west of Kaliningrad. It is also found in Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. It is even procured from the Baltic coast at Dominican Republic, Myanmar, Norway, Denmark and the east coast of United Kingdom. Furthermore, it is found in some parts of Romania, Lebanon, Sicily, Mexico, Germany, Canada and Untied States of America.

Enhancements – It is enhanced in varied ways in order to improvise the look of the stone. The stones consisting gas bubbles inclusions are treated with rapeseed oil under heat so that oil penetrated in the bubbles and increases the transparency. This stone is also dyed or stained to augment the colour.

Imitations – Buyers have to be careful from the poor quality synthetic stones sold as amber. These are artificially created stones from plastics and glass sold under the fancy names at the price of a genuine stone. It could be even a modern tree resin treated to give the old fossil look. The imitations are colored in bright colour to lure the innocent buyers under the misleading names. To know the genuineness of the stone check for the

hardness – the true stone would never be hard like the imitations.

Use – It is cut and polished into cabochon or beads to make exquisite jewelry items. Shapes like oval, round, baroque are quite common. The size could vary between 4mm to 10mm. These beads can be when mixed with wooden beads in the string for making necklace and choker, ideal for casual or professional wear. It is a very soft stone and light in weight therefore, large stones are preferred as smaller stones are difficult to create. It is used in rings, pendants, bracelets, earrings and broaches. It gets very well paired with other semi precious gemstones like aventurine, jasper and black onyx etc. Jewelry designers design striking jewelry using the innovative combinations with other gems. Metal used for making these jewelry pieces is mostly silver. Yellow gold and platinum is used seldom. For the ornamental purpose, it is widely used for making mouthpieces, cigar, cigarette holders, pipes and many other small decorative pieces.

Stones having vanished insects and plant material within it are important evidence for geologists and zoologists. These used as precious research and study material. It helps paleontologists recreate life on earth in its primal phases from the extinct species of insects trapped in amber. Entomologist treasure this gem a lot as from it they are able to know about the oldest ants, moths, bees, caterpillars, termites, mushrooms and pollen grains existing tens of millions of years. Within this fossil gemstone the specimens of extinct species are perfectly preserved with all vital features encapsulated unlike other ordinary fossils that are unfinished rock consisting molds of prehistoric life forms.

Precautions – It is a soft stone, rated between 2-2.5 Mohs on the hardness scale. It requires lot of care and precautions. It is very sensitive towards chemicals and alcohol present in cleaning agents and cosmetics respectively thus, should be protected from any direct contact with these solutions. It can be easily ignited with a direct flame so its jewelry should never be cleaned in ultrasonic home cleaners, steamers and hot water. Once in a while it should be wiped off with a damp soft cloth. It is very soft and can easily be scratched even with the fingers so one must be extra careful while using or cleaning it. Its jewelry should always be kept in a separate jewelry box lined with a soft cloth/velvet/cotton.

Beliefs – Ancient man associated this amazing gem with super natural powers thus, used for worship and wore as amulet to safeguard them from dangers. There are many different stories about its origin but one similarity is – it is related to sun in some or the other way. When it is rubbed with a soft cloth or between the palms it becomes electrically charged and attracts small particles. Due to, this attribute Greeks referred it as elektron or sun-made. Germans burned it as incense thus, called it bernstein or burn stone. Egyptians used it in the mummification process while Romans solved the neck and head diseases by the medicine made up of this startling gemstone. It was used extensively for making jewelry and ornaments.

Today, it is used to cure problems related to eyes, throat, stomach, liver, lungs and digestive system. It is believed to bring good luck for the wearer. Astrologers relate it with healing energy and balancing the belligerent behavior. It also helps in attaining bravery and self-confidence.
It is a fossil revealing the past but it is also a fine-looking gemstone bright in colour that makes the female more gorgeous and elegant. Scientists and researchers might treasure it for knowing about extinct insects/animals/plant trapped inside it but women across the world value it for the dazzling look they get after wearing its jewelry. So acquire the Amber jewelry soon and get the privilege of being addressed as the ‘most beautiful lady in the party today’ where ever you go !!

Any individual who see it for the first time, would definitely fall in love with its natural beauty. And would like to buy it for sure. But, it is very difficult to possess a gem like this easily as market offers many identical gemstones that may not be a genuine gemstone.

There by the article written below provides the necessary information and knowledge about this semi precious stone, which would assist the buyer in buying the true gem. The best way to learn about any gemstone is to begin with four important Cs and then other properties. In this way the buyer can acquire all the required details. Hence, we start with the colour.

Colour

This versatile gemstone strongly exhibits Pleochroism. In this phenomenon, when different light rays fall on the gemstone it displays different colours in different directions/facets. The extraordinary Pleochroism occurs naturally in this gemstone but it is largely dependent on the orientation of the gemstone. The orientation of the crystal can be enhanced through efficient cutting.

It is found in many colours and shades similar to earth tones. Brown and green are the main colours that occur in different shades like reddish brown, greenish brown, reddish green, yellowish green or orangey brown. However other colours are red, gray, orange and pink. The pleochroic colours are red, green and yellow. Through the phenomenon of Pleochroism the originality of the gem can be known.

Clarity

This gemstone may or may not have inclusions. In few stones no inclusions are visible while other stones possesses few dark inclusions. Some stones would consist of elongated fractures that appear due to the intersection of good cleavages/partings within its structure. The transparency of the stone decreases with the increase of inclusions in the stone. A gemstone without any flaws would be completely transparent and it would turn translucent to opaque when the amount of flaws increases.

Cut

Cutting is the most crucial aspect in case of this amazing stone. The entire beauty of the gemstone is dependent solely on the cutting. Cutters have to efficiently cut the stone in such a way that the phenomenon of Pleochroism is highlighted and the cut shape display a blend of pleasing colours. And also the inclusions should be minimized.

Fancy and innovative shapes offer captivating colour play in the same stone. Pear, round, cushion, emerald, oval and many more shapes are available in the market. Each shape has its own uniqueness. Round and rectangular cushion cut are the best shapes that display the perfect blend of the colours. While when the rough is cut along the length in oval, marquis and emerald shapes it shows two different colours that is lighter colour shade in center and darker shade in the outer corner of the gem. The colours come out very beautiful and soothing to eyes if given proper cut. In fact it becomes difficult to take the vision away from the stones. Genuine stone would exhibit beautiful colour blend or different colour shades when seen in different directions.

Carat Weight

It occurs mostly under 5 carats weight. Gems between 5-10 carat weight are found in very few mines while more than 10 carat is almost rare and is produced once in many years.

Price

This semi precious gemstone is priced fairly well for every range in spite of having rare occurrence. Price is determined by the carat weight, cut, colour display and clarity. Origin of the stone does not affect the price much. If the gem is given a custom cut as desired by the buyer then the price would certainly increase. The gemstone possessing large carat weight, clarity and perfect cut that display natural blend of colours is most expensive. Gems without flaws are valuable. Stones with poor cut and artificially polish looks totally unattractive thus are priced least. Enhanced stones would also cost less.

Source

The prime producer of this gemstone are Brazil and Sri Lanka. It is also mined at UK, Spain, Australia, United States, India, Russia and China. It is found in metamorphosis and sedimentary rocks under the high pressure and temperature. Also in granites and pegmatites that arwwe rich in aluminum and silica. There are three polymorphs of Aluminum Silicate viz. kyanite, sillimanite and Andalusite. All three are related to each other with respect to their pressure and temperature formation. These are found rarely and produced in limited quantity even when so many countries produce it.

Enhancement and Imitations

Andalusite is seldom enhanced or heat-treated. Only in few countries it is enhanced to improve the colour displays in order to augment the cost of the gem. It is not very popular among the gemstone buyers therefore noticeable numbers of imitations are not been traced. However, it is sold under many trade names to mislead the buyers.

Uses

Its unique colour display and hardness makes it the desired choice for the men’s jewelry. It is even widely used for the female jewelries. It is very well paired with other gemstones like diamonds, topaz, citrine, pearls etc. The rings holding this gemstone along with diamonds are so exquisite that every woman would like to buy at least one. As it occurs in small carat weight, one single ring can hold 1-5 stones having the total weight between 1-4 carats. Sometimes weight of the stone can be less than one as well like one stone of 0.78 ctw, two stone of total 0.55 ctw or four stones of 0.65 ctw etc. For men’s rings higher ctw stone is preferred that is between 2-4.

Like rings, stud earrings paired with diamonds are very attractive. Earrings and pendants can hold any carat weight between 1-4 ctw. It all varies from one design to another and also with the size of the stone in terms of carat weight. All the jewelries can be made up of 10K, 14K or 18K yellow gold, sterling silver and sometimes even with white gold. Prong setting is quite common for the rings and stud earrings jewelry. Hence, buyer should ensure that prongs hold the stones very well.

Beads are also available in all shapes and styles. These are mostly used for making necklaces and bracelets. Other than the jewelries it is used as the mineral specimen.

Precautions

This gemstone is relatively a tough stone having the hardness between 6.5-7.5 Mohs. This is the reason why it is preferred more for the men’s jewelry. It does not require constant care but few general gemstone precautions are the necessary for the lifetime retention. The Pleochroism phenomenon can be affected if it exposed too much to the acidic solutions. The stone can be split with the direct blows or too much of rough handling. Therefore, exposure to harmful chemicals should be avoided and general protections should be implemented.

Andalusite is one of the most beautiful creations of the nature. The different colour display in different directions is absolutely magnificent. Still this beauty is untouched in many parts of the world. It can certainly create waves in the jewelry business once it gains little attentions and popularity among the jewelry lovers!!
